A quick survey of the Airbase suggests there are some 260 trees of girth greater than 1 meter, but as Seletar Airbase is not a Conservation Area protected by National Parks, only 30 of these will remain standing after the Aerospace Hub is complete.

If you are in Singapore, take a trip to the north east corner of the island, and see the magnificence of nature while it is still around. One of Isabelle’s sketches for our first volume is of a casuarina – it stands at almost 4 times the height of the houses nearby, and overwhelms them. If you are wondering why life seems tranquil here, part of it may be because the relative proportions of natural and manmade structures are pleasing to the eye, and therefore somehow comforting.
